- A mother who donated her son’s organs heard his heart beating in the chest of a four-year-old girl
– The organs of the boy, who tragically died in June 2013, saved three lives
– “We’re family now, we’re friends now, our families are families, we’ve brought our families together.”
When two and a half years ago Heather Clark lost her 7-month-old son
she couldn’t have thought she would hear his heart beating again.
Heather’s son Lukas was killed by her babysitter’s boyfriend in June
2013, since that time he saved three lives, including a four-year-old
girl born with a congenital heart defect. Jordan Drake, who is now four,
received Lukas’ heart when she was just 18 months old.
Nearly three years after a crucial decision the parents of both
children meet for the first time. The heart-breaking moment was captured
in a video that shows Heather listening to her boy’s heartbeat in the
chest of a little and healthy girl.
Explaining her decision to donate her baby’s organs Heather said:
“There is another family out there, somewhere, you know who’s feeling
something of what I’m feeling, somewhat, and I have the chance to make
them not go through what I’m about to go through.”
The girl’s mother, Esther Gonzalez, also couldn’t hide her emotions as she said: “It’s
hard to describe that she would be so selfless to be able to think of
another family while she’s going through her grief. We’re family now,
we’re friends now, our families are families, we’ve brought our families
together.”
According to police reports, the man, identified only as Garcia, had
physically abused the child when Lukas wouldn’t stop crying. He later
pleaded guilty of attempted murder and assault on a child. The police
investigation is still ongoing
